Advocate has 15.7 percent of the Chicago area market, while Presence — formed in 2011 through the merger of Chicago’s Resurrection Health Care and Mokena-based Provena Health System — has 10.3 percent. Northwestern has 5.7 percent of the market, according to the report.
The increased consolidation has some worried that the price of healthcare services in Chicago could rise due to increased bargaining power. A representative of Advocate, however, said consolidation helps to reduce costs and better coordinate care.
