Mark Sanford to challenge Trump in primary: 4 notes for healthcare leaders

Former Rep. Mark Sanford, R-S.C., officially announced plans Sept. 8 to run in the 2020 presidential election.

"I am compelled to enter the Presidential Primary as a Republican for several reasons — the most important of which is to further and foster a national debate on our nation's debt, deficits and spending," he tweeted Sept. 8.

Here are four quick notes on Mr. Sanford:

  1. He served three terms as House representative for South Carolina from 1995 to 2001 and again from 2013-19. From 2003-11, he served as governor of South Carolina.
  2. Mr. Sanford was a member of the conservative and libertarian group, the House Freedom Caucus.
  3. He voted to repeal the ACA in 2017 in favor of the American Health Care Act after initially voting against it, according to The Washington Post. The Freedom Caucus initially opposed the bill because it kept some insurance-related ACA regulations intact, like essential health benefits. The caucus wanted to axe these regulations to reduce premiums, according to The Hill.
  4. Before voting for the AHCA, Mr. Sanford and Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., introduced their own healthcare bill, according to CNN. This bill offers some insight into his healthcare views. The bill aimed to provide more tax breaks for buying health insurance and to lift many of the restrictions on health plans. It also sought to expand health savings accounts, included provisions to sell health insurance across state lines and protections for people with pre-existing conditions. It would have restricted the use of HSA funds for elective abortions, according to CNN.
