Management Tool: Reporting Community Benefits in Times of Scrutiny

Hospitals may find it beneficial to increase the role of public relations and marketing in their benefit-reporting process, especially as regulatory and governmental officials place increased scrutiny on hospitals' non-profit statuses.

Tim Strickland, senior executive advisor with Jarrard Phillips Cate & Hancock, says hospitals need strategic thinking, action and reporting when it comes to community benefits. He provided two downloadable charts for hospital leaders to reassess how they communicate their non-profit status and community benefits.

The "Community Benefit Services Inventory Template" provides a structure for information on hospital programs, such as the source of funding, community partners and relevant contact information.

The "What Counts?" handout highlights which hospital efforts and programs qualify as community benefits to help hospitals avoid the large mistake of reporting programs that do not qualify.
