Lafayette General ends housekeeping contract, resulting in 243 layoffs

Lafayette (La.) General Medical Center did not renew its housekeeping contract with Aramark Healthcare Services, and Aramark will lay off 243 employees as a result.

Aramark will stop operating at the hospital on Dec. 12.

Earlier this week, hospital parent Lafayette General Health confirmed it would transition outsourced environmental services back in-house, although the number of employees affected was not specified. The system said Aramark environmental services employees who worked at the hospital will have the first opportunity to apply for jobs with LGH, according to a KATC report.

The news comes shortly after Lafayette General shared plans to discontinue its complimentary valet parking service on Nov. 18 and close the gym at its wellness center on Nov. 30, which it found unfit to compete with other fitness centers in the area. The system expects to save $2 million over four years by halting free valet services. Forecasted cost savings for closure of the gym were not specified.
