The new six-story, 380,000-square-foot Tom and Billie Long Patient Care Tower features 242 beds, a rooftop helicopter landing pad, separate elevators for transported patients and expanded preoperative and recovery areas. The hospital began planning for the patient care tower approximately 10 years ago with the goal of creating a “seismically safe” facility in the case of a major earthquake, according to the news report.
Although the current patient care tower can remain open to patients until 2030, hospital officials have yet to determine how best to use the old tower. In the meantime, patients can still receive care there, said Michael Monaldo, vice president of facilities development and real estate.
