The health insurer said it has contacted 25 of its largest providers to open up negotiations that move away from the fee-for-service model. Instead, the insurer plans to offer bundled payments on a per patient or per medical episode basis, according to the report.
Pilgrim follows Blue Cross Blue Shielf of Massachusetts, which has transitioned 32 percent of its HMO business to a global payment system, and Tufts Health Plan, which has 20 percent of its business contracted using global payments, according to the report.
