A federal judge has approved a class-action settlement involving St. Vincent Indianapolis and the method it used to collect overdue payments, according to an Indianapolis Business Journal report.
Plaintiff Michael Sargent sued the hospital in Oct. 2008, claiming the hospital violated state debt-collection law by using a collection agency based in St. Louis, called Outsource Group, which was not licensed as a collection agency in Indiana.
The class of 21 plaintiffs represented those sued by Outsource for debt owed to St. Vincent before Oct. 27, 2008. Including Mr. Sargent’s award, the class received a total settlement of $31,500 — $25,500 paid attorney’s fees.
