Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital to Lay Off 31

Elkin, N.C.-based Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital plans to lay off 31 employees, or about 3 percent of its workforce, according to an Elkin Tribune report.

The hospital has been under financial duress for a number of reasons, including lower demand for elective procedures and an increase in care provided to the un- and under-insured, according to the report. About 63 percent of Hugh Chatham Memorial's patients are on Medicare or Medicaid.

Some employees affected by the cuts are in clinical departments, but the layoffs are not expected to affect patient care, because the cuts were designed to align staffing with the lower patient volumes, according to the Elkin Tribune.
