Hospital and Health System Layoffs Continue

Hospital and health system layoffs continue across the country, pitting dismal hospital finances against the provider shortage predicted for the next five years, according to various reports.

St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nev., recently announced the elimination of 20 positions throughout the hospital, primarily in management and administrative support areas, according to a KOLOTV report.

East Jefferson Hospital in Metairie, La., laid off 50 full-time employees this week, citing sharp drop-offs in payments from Medicare and Medicaid. The hospital is currently fighting with Blue Cross/Blue Shield over insurance coverage, a dispute that hospital leaders said could lead to more layoffs in the future, according to a WWL report.

More than 300 workers were let go from New York’s Health and Hospitals Corp. last Friday. The workers’ last day will be Sept. 17. According to a New York 1 report, HHC plans to reduce its workforce by some 3,700 jobs over the next five years.
