Healthcare Tops All Sectors in CEO Turnover, Report Finds

Healthcare organizations led the way in CEO turnover last month with 34 changes at the helm, 17 of which came from hospitals and health systems, according to a report from executive outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

The 34 CEO exits in healthcare reflect those from medical diagnostic manufacturers, imaging software developers and provider organizations. Healthcare is leading all sectors in CEO turnover with 151 changes since the beginning of the year, up from the 140 recorded in the same period in 2012.

Across all industries, 128 CEOs announced their exits in July, up from 94 departures recorded in June. Retirement was the most commonly cited reason for departure in July, but resignation is the most-used reason so far in 2013, according to the report.

Government and nonprofit organizations came in second with 20 CEO changes in July. Financial firms followed with 19 changes.
