The layoffs come as Harris Health expects a budget shortfall of about $72 million for the fiscal year that begins March 1, which is attributed, in part, to the state’s decision not to expand Medicaid. according to the report.
System spokesman John Martinez said in the report that a majority of the layoffs should be done by Friday.
The report cites a memo from CEO George Masi to employees, which notes that the layoffs “will not negatively impact the delivery of patient care services.”
The system, according to its website, includes 16 community health centers, five school-based clinics, a dental center and dialysis center, mobile health units, a rehabilitation and specialty hospital and two full-service hospitals.
