Marcus Hargrave served as CEO of the local YMCA for 11 years until the YMCA’s board of directors eliminated the position in November as part of a cost-cutting effort, according to the report. After removing the position, however, the board was informed having a CEO is a YMCA of USA requirement.
Mr. Merrill will begin is duties as CEO of YMCA of South Boston/Halifax County Jan. 5. According to the report, Mr. Merrill was selected based on his background in fitness and sports medicine and leadership skills.
Other community leaders have accepted appointments to serve on the YMCA board of directors, including Halifax Regional Health System President and CEO Chris Lumsden, South Boston Vice Mayor Coleman Speece, Halifax County Industrial Development Authority Chairman John Cannon and others.
