Former UMass Medical School dean dies at 79

Aaron Lazare, MD, former chancellor and dean of the University of Massachusetts (Worcester) Medical School, died July 14 from complications of renal cell carcinoma, according to The Boston Globe.

He was 79 years old.

Dr. Lazare served as chancellor and dean of UMass Medical School from 1991 to 2007, when he retired due to declining health.

Dr. Lazare also taught at Yale School of Medicine (New Haven, Conn.), Harvard School of Medicine (Boston, Mass.) and Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston) prior to his role at UMass. In 2004, he published his book On Apology.

"His legacy is rich and profound and extends far beyond our campus and the region," the medical school's chancellor, Michael F. Collins, MD, said of Dr. Lazare. "Indeed, his scholarly work focused on elevating and ensuring respect in the doctor-patient relationship remains the standard for clinical and training programs."
