Former Cleveland Clinic CEO Dr. Toby Cosgrove joins American Well board

American Well appointed Toby Cosgrove, MD, former Cleveland Clinic president and CEO, to its board of directors, according to a Nov. 14 news release.

Dr. Cosgrove led Cleveland Clinic as president and CEO from 2004 until 2017. He currently serves as an executive advisor to the health system.

"Having identified telehealth as a key part of Cleveland Clinic's disruptive growth strategy, we achieved much over the past four years," said Dr. Cosgrove, according to the news release. "Working with American Well, I have been impressed with the company's groundbreaking technology, values, mission and focus on revolutionizing the way care is delivered."

In 2018, Dr. Cosgrove joined Google as an executive advisor to the technology giant's healthcare and life sciences division.

In addition to American Well, Dr. Cosgrove also joined the board of directors for telehealth startup Hims & Hers last month. Dr. Cosgrove's moves in the telehealth space reflect his prediction in January that 2019 will be the year of telehealth.
