Ex-Bengals coach undergoing heart transplant

Former Cincinnati Bengals football coach Sam Wyche wrote on his website that he is currently at Charlotte, N.C.-based Carolinas Medical Center’s Dickson Heart Unit where will undergo a heart transplant once physicians locate a donor.

The 71-year-old former coach wrote that if a matching donor is unavailable, he will need to have a left ventricular assist device, or an artificial heart pump, placed below his heart until physicians find a donor.

Mr. Wyche coached the Bengals from 1984 to 1991. He was the last coach to take the team to the Super Bowl during the 1988 season, according to an ESPN article.

Mr. Wyche was also a former quarterback and played for the Bengals, the Washington Redskins, the Detroit Lions and the Los Angeles Rams at various points during his career.
