Erlanger Health looks to new board member's financial expertise as it becomes nonprofit

Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Erlanger Health System is due to become a nonprofit entity July 1 as opposed to its current public system setup.

The seven-hospital system has decided it needs business acumen because of the transition and has appointed local businessman and philanthropist Barry Large to the board as a result, according to a May 31 Chattanooga Times Free Press report.

Mr. Large, who has founded a number of companies, will replace Phillip Burns, MD, professor at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga. That leaves the Erlanger Health board with two medical professionals, the report said.

There remains one other empty position on the board after Jim Coleman became the system's new president and CEO last year.

"Efforts are being made to ensure that the board has diverse representation from health care professionals, including doctors, community and business leaders and key stakeholders," Board Chair Sheila Boyington said in the report.
