Erlanger gets new board member: 5 things to know

Hamilton County's legislative delegation has named Phil Smartt to the Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Erlanger Health System Board of Trustees, according to a Chattanooga Times Free Press report.

Here are five things to know about Mr. Smartt.

1. He is a former insurance executive. He headed Phil Smartt Insurance in Chattanooga until selling it in 2011.

2. He was on the board of trustees of the Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute in Chattanooga for eight years.

3. Mr. Smartt has been involved in politics. He was a founder of the Pachyderm Club, a local Republican group, and was involved in Mitt Romney's campaign for the Republican nomination in the 2008 U.S. presidential election.

4. He graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

5. Of his new position, he said, "I just want to keep them [Erlanger] going in the right direction."
