Dignity Health Employees May Strike for 3 Days

Employees at two hospitals within San Francisco-based Dignity Health, formerly Catholic Healthcare West, have notified administration they may hold a three-day strike beginning June 26, according to a Lompoc Record report.

The employees, who are represented by Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers, would strike from Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria, Calif., and French Hospital in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Union leaders say there has been a lack of progress in contract negotiations after the previous contracts expired April 30. SEIU-UHW members rallied outside Marian Regional on May 1 expressing their dissatisfaction with proposed staffing changes. One nurse cited in the article also said the union is filing an unfair labor practices action against Marian Regional with the National Labor Relations Board for its unwillingness to negotiate.

Marian Regional President Chuck Cova recently said he hopes Dignity Health and the union reach a "mutually agreeable contract resolution" soon, according to the report.
