James Tuschman, chairman of the Ohio Board of Regents, will introduce a resolution this month that asks boards of two- and four-year colleges to ban tobacco on campus. Dr. Cosgrove encouraged college smoking bans at a regents meeting last month, saying universities should take as much time and expense to educate the body as they do the brain, according to the report.
Cleveland Clinic has been a mover and shaker in terms of going smoke-free. In 2007, Dr. Cosgrove announced the already smoke-free health system would no longer hire tobacco users. He is now moving his efforts to state college campuses, where he says 37 percent of students begin the habit after enrolling.
Mr. Tuschman has said smoking bans are “the right thing to do,” according to the report. Jim Petro, chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents, also supports the idea.
