CEO to know: Dr. John Jay Shannon of Cook County Health and Hospital System

John Jay Shannon, MD, is CEO of Chicago-based Cook County Health and Hospital System. Dr. Shannon was voted unanimously into the role in June 2014 after serving three months as the system's interim CEO.

A native of the western suburbs, Dr. Shannon has spent much of his career in Chicago. He worked for CCHHS since 1990, serving as director of the adult asthma clinic, associate chair of the department of medicine and chief of the divisions of pulmonary and critical care medicine at the system's John H. Stroger, Jr., Hospital of Cook County in Chicago. Dr. Shannon served seven years on the executive board of the American Lung Association of Metropolitan Chicago, now known as the Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago. He also served five years on the executive board the Chicago Asthma Consortium.

After a five-year hiatus as executive vice president and CMO of Dallas-based Parkland Health and Hospital System, Dr. Shannon returned to CCHHS in 2013. He served as chief of clinical integration until stepping into his current role as CEO.

Dr. Shannon earned his medical degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago. He trained in internal medicine at Dallas-based University of Texas Southwestern Affiliated Hospitals. He completed a pulmonary and critical care medicine fellowship at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor.
