Mr. Barrett spoke with Fortune about how he believes U.S. healthcare will change under Mr. Trump.
Here are five quotes Mr. Barrett made about how the healthcare system may change in the next few years.
1. “I think one way or another we’re going to see some significant modification to [the ACA]…I think we [should] expect pretty heavy modification to it. The question is where and in what priority.”
2. “I think the competitive forces today are actually improving the cost of healthcare. Even within hospitals…you’re seeing hospitals compete, and it isn’t just along price, it’s now along the published outcomes of the work that they do. So I think competition does work and I think it does improve the patient experience…I do think it improves the quality and the cost, but it also requires companies like ours to be working behind the scenes and helping to make that happen.”
3. “I do think that we’re going to see a more active consumer. I think transparency is likely to increase and I do think that the system is becoming more patient-centered, and I think that’s a good thing.”
4. “For [Cardinal Health] as a healthcare company, I am happy with an active, knowledgeable consumer. I think that is actually good for our business. So [the population’s anger over overpriced drugs] does not concern me. But in the big sense, the breakdown in trust in an angry America, I think, does concern me, and I think we’ve got a lot to think about as a country.”
5. “I don’t think there’s a silver bullet that fixes healthcare. But if you make it centered around the patient, you’re on the right path and I think that is the heart of it.”
