Broward Health interviews 4 finalists for CEO role amid leadership indictments

Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Broward Health started interviewing its four finalists for the CEO role Jan. 22, according to a Sun Sentinel report.

The four finalists are:

• Barbara Martin, former CEO of Vista Health System in Waukegan, Ill.
• Michael Young, former CEO of Pinnacle Health System in Harrisburg, Pa.
• Joseph Gilene, former president of KentuckyOne Health's Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Ky.
• Robert Minkin, former CEO of O'Connor Hospital in San Jose, Calif., and St. Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy, Calif.

Board members of the troubled health system met Ms. Martin and Mr. Young for around an hour each.

The health system's top leadership position has been in flux since Nabil El Sanadi, MD, Broward's last permanent CEO, was found dead in his home from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in January 2016. Since then, a series of interim CEOs have led the health system.

The system's legal and financial issues have gotten in the way of hiring a permanent CEO. In October 2016, Broward started interviewing candidates, but suspended its search indefinitely later that month after a report by law firm Baker Donelson revealed numerous issues at Broward Health.

Recently, five officials from North Broward Health District, which runs Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Broward Health, were indicted on criminal charges for allegedly violating Florida's open-meetings laws to bring about the termination of the health system's former interim CEO. The officials indicted include board Chairman Rocky Rodriguez, Broward Health interim President and CEO Beverly Capasso as well as three other current and former leaders. On Dec. 19, 2017, the five leaders filed a motion arguing the indictment against them should be dismissed because of prosecutorial misconduct and grand jury abuse.

Interviews for the CEO role at Broward Health are ongoing, with board members planning to interview the remaining finalists, Mr. Gilene and Mr. Minkin, Jan. 23, according to the report.
