Question: What do innovators/entrepreneurs from outside healthcare need to better understand about hospital and health system leaders?

Elliot Joseph: When you’re looking for a healthcare partner, look for agility. That means strong, centralized, systemwide governance. And it’s also reflected in management: How does this organization make decisions about big, strategic initiatives. Finally, find providers who are creating a true platform. It means they’re open to real partnerships.

Q: What one strategic initiative will demand the most of your time and energy in 2019?

EJ: Fundamentally improving the patient/customer experience. This could be our most aggressive ambition to date. We call it #123 – being number one in patient/customer service in the Northeast by 2023.

Q: Healthcare takes a lot of heat for not innovating quickly. What's your take on this?

EJ: It’s about clarity of vision. Healthcare systems need to be able to answer the question: What are we trying to become in the long term? Without a clear answer to that question, innovation will be hit-or-miss or it will stall out – or both.
