Spotlight on Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago: 4 quick facts

Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, formerly Children's Memorial Hospital, is the largest pediatric provider in the region.

The nonprofit children's hospital consistently receives high rankings in quality and patient satisfaction, and is a leader in research, education and advocacy for the well-being of children.

Four things to know about Lurie Children's:

1. U.S. News & World Report ranked Lurie Children's cardiology and heart surgery program second best in the nation in its 2018-19 rankings. The Heart Center at Lurie Children's is the largest pediatric heart center in the region, offering comprehensive heart services ranging from fetal cardiology to heart transplantation. Lurie Children's cardiologists treat more than 16,000 outpatients and 300 inpatients annually. Heart surgeons also perform more than 750 cardiac catheterization procedures and 450 heart surgeries each year.

2. The Chicago Institute for Fetal Health at Lurie Children's is one of only several comprehensive fetal health centers in the U.S. The institute is also the only facility in Illinois to perform myelomeningocele repair in utero. The center staffs a multidisciplinary team of experts from 23 different specialties, including pediatric neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery. Specialists at the center perform more than 1,800 consultations annually with expectant parents from across the U.S.

3. Lurie Children's is among the first group of hospitals to open an intermediate care unit for patients who require a higher level of observation and care than what is provided in general inpatient units, but do not need intensive care. The 20-bed unit, opened in February 2019, offers 24/7 physician, nursing and respiratory care coverage for children with conditions such as bronchiolitis, pneumonia and tracheitis.

4. In 2012, the hospital moved from its location in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood to the Streeterville campus of its academic partner, the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. The new facility will soon have 364 private rooms, 21 operating rooms and a rooftop garden on the 11th floor. The hospital is also twice the square footage of its previous campus but only reports 20 percent higher energy costs due to its sustainable design.
