AHA releases fast facts on US hospitals — 5 key points

Five points on hospitals from the American Hospital Association.

1. There are a total of 6,146 hospitals in the U.S.

2. Of these, there are approximately 5,400 acute care hospitals, 616 psychiatric hospital and 123 other hospitals such as long-term acute care hospitals.

3. The total number of hospitals includes 1,296 for-profit hospitals.

4. Most community hospitals, around 3,491, are in a system. This essentially includes hospital systems with more than one hospital.

5. The nation has 1,821 rural community hospitals.
