8 hospital layoffs in May

The following hospital layoffs were reported by Becker's Hospital Review in May.

1. The Ventura County Health Care Agency, a California-based system of hospital, clinic and specialty services, said cost-cutting at the agency will affect 271 healthcare workers, including workers at Ventura (Calif.) County Medical Center and Santa Paula (Calif.) Hospital.

2. Detroit Medical Center began layoffs of roughly 1 percent of its workforce, about 117 employees.

3. La Crosse, Wis.-based Mayo Clinic Health System-Franciscan Healthcare plans to reduce staff and eliminate positions.

4. Shriners Hospitals for Children in Tampa (Fla.) will lay off 60 employees.

5. Dickinson County Healthcare System in Iron Mountain, Mich., will lay off employees as it prepares to implement its restructuring plan.

6. Waukesha-based LifeCare Hospitals of Wisconsin will close its long-term care facility in Pewaukee, Wis., resulting in 171 layoffs. 

7. Lockport, N.Y.-based Eastern Niagara Hospital will close its maternity unit and eliminate dialysis, express care and X-ray services at its facility in Newfane, N.Y. The plan will result in 41 layoffs.

8. Fayette Regional Health System, a single-hospital system based in Connersville, Ind., will cease operations at its facilities no later than July 31 and lay off 437 employees.
