LifeCare to close Wisconsin long-term care hospital, lay off 171

Waukesha-based LifeCare Hospitals of Wisconsin will close its long-term care facility in Pewaukee, Wis., which will result in 171 layoffs, according to the Milwaukee Business Journal.

Due to increasing regulatory burdens, declining patient volumes and decreasing reimbursements, the hospital could no longer sustain operations, the company said.

Patient care at the facility will continue until all patients are transferred. Currently 20 patients are receiving care at the hospital. The facility anticipates closing on or around June 23.

"This is not a decision we take lightly. As we move forward, we will work to ensure a smooth transition for patients while attempting to minimize the effect of this decision on our employees and medical staff," the company told the Business Journal.

Eligible laid-off employees will receive severance and other resources, LifeCare said.
