Management by expectations is open-ended and can often leave leaders disappointed when their expectations were not met, though they were never fully articulated in the first place. Management by agreement, on the other hand, is detailed and leaves little room for miscommunication.
Listed below are five steps leaders can employ to manage by agreement.
1. Discuss specific details with employees, even if you think they may be obvious. Lay out exactly what you want, how you want it done and when you want it by.
2. Create an agreement where all parties come to a consensus on when the task will be completed.
3. Make sure you ask what the potential roadblocks are for this project. Understanding these obstacles will allow you to help your workers overcome them,
4. Ask to be consulted immediately if any obstacles arise so you are not surprised with excuses as due dates near.
5. Ask if the agreement requires any assistance from you, and outline what you can do to help ensure these goals are realized.
