Here are five steps every executive can take to treat their employees more respectfully.
1. Understand the contagious effects of bad behavior. Rudeness spreads from the top down, and if employees observe a disrespectful leader, they are more likely to engage in a similar behavior. Leaders should be aware of the toxic nature of their bad behavior if they hope to change it.
2. Check your privilege. Your power can lead to certain benefits and accommodations that are easy to get used to, but keep these in mind as you go throughout your day to make sure you do not abuse the perks of your position.
3. Look out for the challenges of overload. An overloaded schedule can cause even the most conscientious leaders to act disrespectfully, so be sure to take time out every day to time to breathe and regroup.
4. When someone calls you out, don’t fight it. If someone builds up the courage to address your behavior, there is a good chance you are acting disrespectfully. Don’t be affronted, but take their comments into serious consideration.
5. Don’t be afraid to apologize. Employees don’t expect perfection, but they expect accountability. If you offer a sincere apology without defensiveness, mutual respect will build.
