Listed below are four ways for leaders to connect with both their peers and subordinates.
1. Sharpen your ability notice signs of suffering. People around you can often be suffering without showing it, so it is important to have a good eye for the subtle signs that someone might be in need of help.
2. Find non-confrontational ways to ask personal questions. In the workplace, it can often be tricky to inquire about a colleague’s well-being. Leaders should keep questions vague — like “are you okay?” — to allow someone to get as personal as they’re comfortable with.
3. Tune into your feelings of concerns. Even if you have not been through the same situation as a colleague, being able to empathize with their situation helps you to treat them sensitively.
4. Be creative with your compassion. Do not simply offer someone a pat on the back with your condolences. Instead, thinking of new and different ways to express your feelings while also considering what someone might need could have a real and significant impact for them.
