2 healthcare groups react to Justice Department’s support of abolishing ACA

The Justice Department’s decision to support a Texas judge’s ruling that called for the entire ACA to be struck down has sparked concern from the American Hospital Association and the Federation of American Hospitals.

American Hospital Association President and CEO Rick Pollack called the decision “misguided.”

“The position is unprecedented and unsupported by the law or the facts. Millions of Americans would lose the coverage they have relied on for years. We have made too much progress in coverage and access to care for patients to go backward,” Mr. Pollack said in a news release.

“If courts were to adopt the DOJ position, Medicaid expansion would be reversed and protections for people with chronic and preexisting conditions would cease to exist,” he added.

Federation of American Hospitals President and CEO Chip Kahn also spoke out against the Trump administration’s ACA decision.

The decision “is unfortunate but not unexpected considering their long-held views on the health law,” Mr. Kahn said in a news release.

He added: “Millions of Americans depend on the ACA to access healthcare and rely on the insurance protections afforded in the law. We continue to believe the district court judge got it wrong and trust that this decision will be overturned in the appeals process.”
