12 Recent Hospital and Health System Layoffs

The following hospital and/or health system job eliminations were announced or implemented within the past month. They are listed by the number of employees or positions affected.  

1. St. Rose Dominican Hospitals in Las Vegas Cuts 100 Jobs
St. Rose Dominican Hospitals in Las Vegas eliminated 100 positions, including 21 managers, from three hospitals. Roughly 50 of the cuts were implemented already when people who left their positions were not replaced, but the remainder of cuts were planned to take place at St. Rose San Martin in Las Vegas, and St. Rose Siena and St. Rose de Lima in Henderson, Nev.

2. Saint Agnes Medical Center in California to Lay Off 75 Employees
Saint Agnes Medical Center in Fresno, Calif., announced plans to lay off 75 employees. The hospital said the layoffs are "necessary actions" in light of declining patient volumes, reimbursement changes and a slow economic recovery.

3. County Officials Lay Off Nearly 70 Employees at Washington Hospital in California
Washington Township Health Care District in Fremont, Calif., eliminated 200 full-time positions, affecting approximately 68 employees at Washington Hospital in Fremont.

4. Summa Health in Ohio Lays Off 54 Employees
Akron, Ohio-based Summa Health System laid off 54 employees. The workforce reduction is expected to save roughly $4.5 million. Layoffs affected clinical and non-clinical staff but not registered nurses who provide bedside care.

5. Kaiser Permanente Hawaii to Lay Off 47 Nurses
As of Jan. 28, Kaiser Permanente Hawaii was planning to lay off 47 registered nurses at some of its 18 clinics as part of a "redesign." The proposed layoffs mean roughly 25 percent of registered nurses at Kaiser's Hawaii clinics would be affected.

6. Faxton St. Luke's in New York Trims 37 Jobs
Utica, N.Y.-based Faxton St. Luke's Healthcare eliminated 37 jobs. Ten employees were laid off and 27 vacant positions were cut.  

7. Calhoun County Hospital in Georgia to Cut 29 Jobs
Calhoun County Hospital in Arlington, Ga., laid off 29 employees. The layoffs were attributed to Calhoun County's unstable financial condition, as CEO Earl Whitely said the amount the hospital spends on indigent care has rocketed over the past four years.

8. Orleans Community Health in New York Reduces Staff
Earlier this month, Orleans Community Health in Medina, N.Y., was implementing workforce changes affecting 25 people, or the equivalent of 16 full-time employees. All employees will not lose their jobs, according to the report, as some will undergo a reduction in work hours under the changes.

9.Cheyenne Regional Medical Center in Wyoming Cuts Administrative Positions
Cheyenne (Wyo.) Regional Medical Center laid off eight members of its administrative staff. The hospital has also decided to not fill 10 vacant positions in areas that include finance, fundraising, volunteer services and central supply.

10. Three Rivers Health in Michigan Cuts 8 Management Positions
Three Rivers (Mich.) Health is restructuring its management team by eliminating eight positions.

11. Layoffs Under Way at Glendale Memorial Hospital in California
Glendale (Calif.) Memorial Hospital and Health Center announced plans to lay off an undetermined number of employees. A hospital spokesperson said the layoffs were in their "preliminary stages" on Jan. 22.

12. North Memorial Medical Center in Minnesota Downsizes
As of Jan. 22, North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, Minn., was implementing a staff reduction affecting an unspecified number of employees.
