“A curiosity and learning mindset” is a common trait among high-performing CEOs, Fortune reported Nov. 16.

The takeaway comes from “A CEO for All Seasons: Mastering the Cycles of Leadership,” which was written by McKinsey senior partners. The authors interviewed more than 30 prominent CEOs and identified four key stages of a CEO’s tenure.

“It wasn’t that they were superhuman,” Kurt Strovink, McKinsey senior partner, told Fortune. “It’s that they learned faster, they were more adaptable and they had structures … institutionalized methods for being able to neutralize their excesses and capitalize on their strength and edge.”

The book highlights the growing demands of modern leadership. The most successful leaders navigate the complexity by making confident decisions with incomplete information while maintaining a commitment to constant learning, Fortune reported.

In healthcare, some CEOs are embracing a similar mindset. Aimee Brewer, president and CEO of Attleboro, Mass.-based Sturdy Health, told Becker’s she is focused on developing a C-suite committed to continuous learning, leading change and responsible risk taking.
