The South Carolina legislature has passed a new law, effective Sept. 11, that mandates the testing of newborns for congenital heart defects within 48 hours of birth, according to a report from the Herald Online.
The law makes the state the 21st in the country to pass this legislation.
All 43 birthing hospitals in the state now have screening policies in place for testing newborns, and the state hospital association in South Carolina is working with each institution to ensure that it has the equipment it needs to comply.
