Mr. Townsend became the Cedar Rapid hospital’s president and CEO in 2002. Prior to that, he served in executive roles at Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger Health System, such as vice president of public affairs and COO. He has nearly four decades of experience in the healthcare industry.
During his tenure at Cedar Rapids, the hospital grew to include 194 healthcare providers and 33 clinics. It was also named to IBM Watson’s Top 100 Hospital ranking seven times.
Mr. Townsend is a charter board member for the Iowa HealthCare Quality Collaborative and a board member with the Cedar Rapids Economic Alliance.
Michelle Niermann, UnityPoint Health-Cedar Rapids’ current executive vice president and COO, will succeed Mr. Townsend, effective Jan. 1, 2019.
