UI Hospitals and Clinics CEO Kenneth Kates to retire this year

Iowa City-based University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics CEO Kenneth P. Kates is retiring, effective in the summer, ending a 10-year tenure. Mr. Kates also serves as associate vice president of University of Iowa Health Care.

During Mr. Kates’ tenure, UI Hospitals and Clinics opened the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City and implemented the Epic EHR system. From 2009 to 2017, the organization saw an increase of 16 percent in inpatients and 23 percent in outpatients.

UI Hospitals and Clinics also received the 2014 Health Information and Management Systems Society Enterprise Davies Award, which recognizes providers for outstanding use of EHRs and other health IT.

In all, Mr. Kates has spent 40 years in the healthcare arena. “I am so grateful for all the amazing people I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside,” he said in a statement.

The organization is forming a search committee to identify Mr. Kates’ successor.
