Mr. Mitchell has served in the dual role as president and chancellor of the respective entities, both based in Lubbock, for the past year. He initially became president of the center in 2010, and he added the chancellor title in October 2018.
He is the longest-serving president during Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center’s history. During his tenure, the center completed its largest campus expansion and launched a fundraising campaign that has nearly reached it $100 million goal. He also spearheaded the establishment of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso.
So far as chancellor of the university system, Mr. Mitchell oversaw the addition of two new professional degree programs and schools — dental and veterinary medicine. He will now focus his efforts full-time on his duties as chancellor.
Lori Rice-Spearman, provost and chief academic officer at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, will become interim president while the search for a permanent replacement is conducted.
