SUNY Downstate Medical Center taps Dr. Wayne Riley to serve as president: 5 notes

State University of New York's Downstate Medical Center in New York City named Wayne J. Riley, MD, president, effective April 3, 2017.

Here are five notes:

1. Dr. Riley, a primary care general internist, is currently a clinical professor of medicine and adjunct health policy professor at Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

2. In addition to serving as Downstate Medical Center's president, Dr. Riley will also serve as an internal medicine professor in the college of medicine and health policy and management professor in the school of public health.

3. Dr. Riley is immediate past president and president emeritus of the American College of Physicians.

4. Prior to joining Vanderbilt University, he was president and CEO as well as a professor of medicine at Meharry Medical College in Nashville.

5. He holds an MBA from Rice University in Houston.
