Stanford Medicine taps 1st-ever emergency medicine department chair

Stanford (Calif.) Medicine appointed Andra Blomkalns, MD, inaugural chair of the emergency medicine department at Stanford (Calif.) University School of Medicine, effective Sept. 15.

Dr. Blomkalns is the division chief of general emergency medicine and vice chair for academic affairs and business development at Dallas-based University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center’s emergency medicine department. Additionally, she serves on UT Southwestern’s intellectual property advisory committee and is the clinical liaison to the office for technology development.

Dr. Blomkalns formerly served as residency program director and vice chair for academic affairs in emergency medicine at the University of Cincinnati. She is a past president of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine. In addition to her clinical degrees, she holds an MBA from the University of Texas-Dallas.

“Dr. Blomkalns has a passion for innovation, entrepreneurship and the translation of academic discovery to the patient bedside,” said Lloyd Minor, MD, dean of Stanford’s medical school.
