Sean Townsend, MD, chief medical executive for clinical transformation at Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health, will soon join Renton, Wash.-based Providence as chief medical officer of its Sonoma County, Calif., service area.
Providence announced May 11 the appointment of Dr. Townsend. On June 1, he will assume the CMO role for Providence Sonoma County, which includes three hospitals — Santa Rosa (Calif.) Memorial Hospital, Healdsburg (Calif.) Hospital and Petaluma Valley Hospital in Petaluma, Calif.
Dr. Townsend is joining Providence after a yearslong tenure at Sutter Health, where he served as chief operating officer and vice president of quality and safety at California Pacific Medical Center, the system’s three-hospital academic medical center. At Sutter, he led systemwide initiatives to “advance clinical integration, physician-led governance, service line growth, patient safety, health equity, data analytics and patient experience,” according to a Providence news release.
Dr. Townsend developed SEP-1, the first national sepsis quality measure adopted by CMS and “continues to serve as the national measure steward,” the release said.
