Larry Coomes, CEO of Prime Healthcare’s Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, Ill., has been appointed CEO of the system’s Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago, effective June 22.
The move is part of a planned leadership transition with Prime’s Illinois hospitals, a health system spokesperson said in a June 17 statement shared with Becker’s. Both hospitals were acquired by Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare as part of an eight-hospital deal with St. Louis-based Ascension in March 2025.
Leonard Freehof has been appointed CEO of Saint Joseph, effective June 22, to succeed Mr. Coomes, according to an internal memo from President and Chief Medical Officer Sunny Bhatia, MD, that was shared with Becker’s.
Mr. Coomes joined Prime in October as CEO of Saint Joseph Medical Center, according to his LinkedIn profile. During that time, he helped strengthen physician engagement, support strategic growth initiatives and advance operational performance, Dr. Bhatia said in a separate memo shared with Becker’s.
He brings more than 20 years of healthcare leadership experience to the role, including serving as CEO of Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa, Calif., part of Renton, Wash.-based Providence, from 2015 to 2021. He was also CEO of Palm Beach (Fla.) Gardens Medical Center from 2012 to 2015.
Mr. Freehof brings more than 40 years of healthcare leadership experience to Saint Joseph Medical Center, including more than 25 years in CEO roles.
He most recently served as a healthcare consultant and interim CEO for several hospitals within Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems. Mr. Freehof previously spent 14 years as CEO of Spring Valley Hospital Medical Center in Las Vegas.
