Penn State Hershey names new president

Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center appointed Deborah A. Berini president of the hospital, effective Sept. 17.

Penn State Health’s board of directors, as well as the hospital’s board, recently confirmed Ms. Berini’s appointment, the hospital announced Aug. 29.

Here are four things to know:

1. Ms. Berini most recently served as COO of UTMB Health in Galveston, Texas. Under her direction, the system grew from a single-campus organization into a three-hospital system with 99 outpatient clinics.

2. She has also held leadership roles at a UAB Hospital in Birmingham and UW Hospitals and Clinics in Madison, Wis.

3. Ms. Berini earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Springfield, Mo.-based Drury University and a master’s in health administration from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

4. Ms. Berini will succeed Alan Brechbill, who served as president of Penn State Hershey since 2006. He will transition into a full-time role as executive vice president for hospital operations at Penn State Health.
