Memorial Hermann appoints new chief physician executive: 4 takeaways

Houston-based Memorial Hermann Health System selected James McCarthy, MD, to serve as executive vice president and chief physician executive, effective March 19.

1. Dr. McCarthy most recently served as associate professor and chairman of the department of emergency medicine at the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, Memorial Hermann’s academic partner.

2. Per the academic partnership, he was also chief of emergency medical services at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in Houston.

3. He has also served as medical staff president at Memorial Hermann- Texas Medical Center and chair of Memorial Hermann’s quality committee.

4. Dr. McCarthy is also serving a three-year appointment on the governor’s EMS and Trauma Advisory Council’s cardiac care committee under the Texas Department of State Health Services.
