Massachusetts system taps chief medical officer

Gardner, Mass.-based Heywood Healthcare named Kavita Babu, MD, chief medical officer and vice president of medical affairs.

Dr. Babu has led a number of quality improvement, patient safety, physician engagement and operational excellence projects, and has played a key role in advancing substance use disorder services and community-based care, according to a May 28 system news release shared with Becker’s. She will remain a practicing emergency physician as she steps into her new role.

She replaces Frank Sweeney, MD, who served as CMO for the past year and is reentering retirement. Dr. Sweeney will continue to be actively involved as president of the physician-hospital organization and a member of the system’s board of trustees.
