Hospital CEO turnover through the first two months of 2026 was flat compared to the same period in 2025, according to an April 28 report from executive outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, which tracks CEO exits across the U.S.
Six things to know:
1. January and February saw a combined 25 hospital CEO exits, unchanged from the same period in 2025.
2. Fourteen exits occurred in January and 11 in February. In February 2025, there were 15 hospital CEO departures.
3. Across all industries, CEO exits fell 32% to 142 in February from 209 in January and were down 42% year over year. This marked the lowest February total since 2022.
4. U.S. companies recorded 351 CEO exits through February, down 25% from 469 during the same period in 2025 and returning to pre-2024 levels after two years of elevated turnover.
5. “Companies paused CEO decisions in February,” Andy Challenger, senior vice president at Challenger, Gray & Christmas, said in the report, citing economic pressure, AI disruption and political uncertainty as drivers of elevated turnover in previous years.
6. Since Dec. 22, Becker’s has reported on nearly 90 hospital and health system CEO exits, driven by a mix of retirements, leadership transitions and executives moving into new roles.
