Highmark Health taps 1st-ever COO: 4 things to know

Pittsburgh-based Highmark Health appointed Karen Hanlon COO, a newly created role.

Highmark Health is the parent company of Highmark, Allegheny Health Network and HM Health Solutions.

Here are four things to know:

1. Ms. Hanlon most recently served as executive vice president and CFO. She will continue as CFO until her replacement is appointed.

2. She joined Highmark Health in 1997, prior to which she worked in public accounting at KPMG Peat Marwick.

3. She serves on the board of directors of Hershey, Pa.-based Penn State Health, which offers guidance on the collaboration between Highmark Health and Penn State Health.

4. As inaugural COO, Ms. Hanlon will add responsibility for HM Health Solutions and Highmark Health Analytics and Informatics to her current duties.
