HealthPartners CEO Mary Brainerd to retire

Bloomington, Minn.-based HealthPartners President and CEO Mary Brainerd will retire June 1.

Here are six things to know about the transition.

1. Ms. Brainerd joined HealthPartners in 1992 and has served as president and CEO since 2002.

2. Under Ms. Brainerd’s leadership, the nonprofit healthcare organization grew to encompass seven hospitals and more than 23,000 employees, including 1,700 physicians.

3. Ms. Brainerd is one of the founding CEOs and former chair of the Itasca Project, a coalition of 40 government, civic and business leaders designated to oversee the effects of long-term economic growth in the Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn., areas.

4. Andrea Walsh, executive vice president of HealthPartners, will succeed Ms. Brainerd as president and CEO of the organization.

5. Ms. Walsh joined HealthPartners in 1994 and has held numerous leadership roles with the organization, including chief marketing officer and senior vice president & corporate counsel of public and legal affairs.

6. She is a member of Ms. Brainerd’s senior leadership team, undertaking tasks like creating and providing health solutions for care and financing. Before joining HealthPartners, Ms. Walsh practiced law and served as an assistant commissioner for the Minnesota Department of Health.
