HCA Taps William Rutherford as CFO

Nashville, Tenn.-based Hospital Corp. of America has named William Rutherford executive vice president and CFO, effective Jan. 1.

WilliamRutherfordMr. Rutherford, 49, will succeed Milton Johnson. Milton Johnson will become president and CEO of HCA next year, replacing Richard Bracken, who is retiring.

Mr. Rutherford currently serves as COO of HCA’s Physician Services Group. He has been with HCA for 24 years, starting as a staff auditor. He later served in other roles with HCA, including CFO of its Eastern Group and CFO of its Outpatient Services Group. Mr. Rutherford also had a one-year stint as COO of Psychiatric Solutions, a behavioral health services provider that was eventually bought out by King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services.

As CFO, Mr. Rutherford will oversee financial management within the company’s treasury department, office of the controller, information technology and other areas.

In fiscal year 2012, HCA, the largest for-profit hospital operator in the United States, posted net income of $1.6 billion on $33 billion of total revenue. Through the first half of FY 2013, HCA’s profit totaled $767 million, leading to a credit upgrade from Fitch Ratings in August.
