Former US Rep. Allyson Schwartz to lead new Medicare-focused group

Former U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz, D-Pa., will serve as president and CEO of the Medicare Advantage advocate group Better Medicare Alliance, according to Philly.com.

Better Medicare Alliance launched in December and consists of health insurers such as Aetna, medical providers, hospitals, advocates for Medicare Advantage recipients and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Ms. Schwartz has extensive experience working on healthcare issues and with Congress. While in Congress, she worked on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, among other healthcare policies. She ran for governor but lost in the Democratic primary elections.

In her new role, Ms. Schwartz calls for a focus on primary care, improved care coordination, better treatment for chronic conditions and modernized financing and healthcare delivery, according to the report.

Medicare Advantage offers recipients the choice to obtain plans offered by private insurance companies that contract with Medicare. Enrollment has drastically increased in the last few years, and approximately 30 percent of Medicare recipients are now enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans, according to the report.
