Dr. Michael Gustafson to serve as UMass Memorial Medical Center president: 5 notes

Worcester, Mass.-based UMass Memorial Health Care appointed Michael Gustafson, MD, president of UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, effective Sept. 1.

Here are five notes:

1. Most recently, Dr. Gustafson served as president of Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital in Boston.

2. He was previously Faulkner Hospital’s COO.

3. He also founded and directed Boston-based Brigham and Women’s Center for Clinical Excellence.

4. A general surgeon, he worked at Brigham and Women’s Hospital for nearly 20 years. During that time, he also directed several departments, including pathology and neurology.

5. Dr. Gustafson is the permanent successor to Patrick Muldoon, who retired in January. UMass Memorial Medical Center COO Jeff Smith, MD, has been serving as interim president.
